For employers

We provide commercially sound, practical tax advice to employers who need to relocate key personnel – taking into account the complexities involved with multi-jurisdictional tax heads.

We can advise on the availability of Irish tax reliefs/exemptions such as:

There are a number of different employment situations which arise when an individual is sent to work overseas. The implications from a tax and social security perspective often depends on the length of the assignment/relocation.

Usually one of the following four scenarios will apply:

  1. long term assignment (i.e. greater than 1 year)
  2. short term assignment (3-12 months)
  3. rotational assignment (i.e. employee returns home at the weekends)
  4. permanent relocation

We work with the employer to determine what their commercial needs are in terms of relocation of employees. We can then advise on the tax implications of each of the appropriate scenarios with reference to the available exemptions and reliefs.

Additionally we review the employee’s contract of employment to ensure the tax outcome is understood and quantified before the assignment begins. We can outline the advantages or disadvantages in each case of:

Issues such as managing permanent establishment risk need to be considered also (the risk the employer inadvertently creates a taxable presence when employees work in various locations).

For the relocating employee our goal is that they understand the tax implications of accepting their new assignment while keeping in mind that a relocation is not just a tax transaction – it often represents personal upheaval.

We appreciate how difficult it can be to tailor packages to suit the needs of all stakeholders – the HR function, the Finance Director and the employee. We have over 10 years experience working with employers and employees to ensure the tax aspects of relocation or assignment are managed properly.

Key employees don’t need the added stress of worrying about their Taxes. Employers need to be very clear about the cost of the employee’s move. They also need to ensure they meet their compliance obligations at home and abroad.

That’s where we come in.
