An Airline Pilot Navigating Cross-Border Tax Compliance

We worked with a UK-born airline pilot who resided in Ireland with his family, but travelled to the UK once a week to work on aircrafts serving UK airports. Triggering Irish tax residency, but with UK taxes being deducted at source due to his irregular long-haul flight schedule, our client required advice and support in managing his tax affairs more effectively.

Problem

  • The pilot faced uncertainty regarding his Irish tax obligations and sought assistance with remittance-basis of taxation and regulatory compliance.

Process

  • Through a thorough consultation process, we were able to provide support and guidance to address the pilot’s unique circumstances. We crafted a comprehensive cross-border advisory memo, meticulously covering Irish tax considerations, social insurance implications, and actionable steps for engaging with his UK employer.
  • Our collaboration with a UK tax expert also ensured that we took UK regulations (applicable to non-UK resident airline crew members) into account.
  • Our strategic advice enabled the pilot to manage his tax responsibilities and successfully minimise his Irish tax liability by leveraging the benefits of the remittance basis of tax.

Outcome

  • With our personalised approach, the pilot was able to confidently navigate his cross-border tax obligations, capitalising on tax benefits, and ensuring adherence to regulatory requirements.
  • After chatting extensively with our team, the pilot was also able to identify potential planning opportunities and approach his employer with confidence as an Irish tax resident commuting to the UK — all while maintaining full compliance with tax regulations.
  • He could then focus on his career and maximise his financial well-being.
